1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books before Kindergarten

Join anytime!

A reading adventure for children from birth through Kindergarten! The idea is simple, and the benefits last a lifetime. Your mission: read 1,000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. Begin by reading any book you like—even the same one over and over.

Track your child’s progress and earn fun prizes to build your own storytime kit, complete with a New Lisbon Memorial Library tote bag, tambourines and egg shaker, book buddy stuffed animal, finger puppets and a book . When your child completes the program, the library will add a new book to its collection in their honor.

One thousand books might sound overwhelming, but it’s more doable than you think. Whether your child is three years old or three months old, now is the perfect time to begin. Reading just one book a night gets you there in three years. Three books a night? You’ll finish in a year. Stop by the library to register and pick up your tote bag to get started.

What are the benefits of early reading with your child?

    • It helps your child learn the sounds of language.
    • It allows your child to hear more words and prepare for kindergarten.
    • It’s the beginning of a lifetime of reading and exploring.
    • It’s a great way to bond and have fun with your child.

If you visit the library during the school year, chances are you’ll be able to overhear a story time or library lesson at some point! Each kindergarten through 4th grade class from New Lisbon Elementary School visits the Memorial Library every other week. Students learn about public library services and etiquette, get to know the librarians, and practice checking out and caring for library materials.
